It looks like rain

It Looks Like Rain
Staring out the window, watching the waters rolling in
And the house just down the hill looks like its filling up again
I can see the whole town. You know its safe up on the ridge
Where the dead cars look like lost toys floating down under the bridge
But don’t
But don’t
Don’t get me mistaken
Cause I don’t give one damn at all
Cause even though ten years ago I ripped your picture off the wall
I still feel forsaken, as though my destiny is pain
Now every time it looks like rain I hear your voice
Whispering my name
I remember when they found you in the trees
With my gun wet in your hand
With the blood washed off the leaves
I was broken down, tried to find the kids all day
Little Katie was in Mexico, Bobby Jo was locked away
But don’t
But don’t
Don’t get me mistaken
Cause I don’t give one damn at all
Cause even though ten years ago I ripped your picture off the wall
I still feel forsaken, as though you did this to me, Jane
Now every time it looks like rain I hear your voice
Whispering my name
I have given up, let the shadows wander in
There is whiskey in my cup and there is ice beneath my skin
But I’m listening, and I’m closing up my eyes
For I’ve seen the gray clouds sweeping in and darkening the skies
But don’t
But don’t
Don’t wait for me in heaven
Cause I’ll be haunting our old place
And even they tear it down I’ll still be searching for your face
Among the broken walls and the foundation down below
And when it looks like rain, I’ll hear you Jane
And I’ll know where to go
Know where to go

Shelby County Line
Guess what. You’ve been struggling all your days
If you’ve failed to amend your ways
Lord it ain’t from lack of trying, no
I guess people get messed up as they grow old
And their shoulders become cold
And they ain’t no good for crying on
And these people live like mannequins
Standing around all day
Pissing their lives away
What would you expect me to say?
And the grossest corruption is most of the things once held aloft
Have either gone brittle or soft
And are sagging and crumbling today
You’re better off lost somewhere in Memphis
You can leave your troubles behind
You get all boozed up and useless
Grow numb to the passing of time
You get busted on the inside
But the outside will be just fine
When you leave your mind on the Shelby County line
Guess what. Life never turns out quite like a dream
And no one alive even cares what you mean
It’s a deaf ear words ever lie upon
I guess people possessed of a broken soul
Are eager to wrest any sense of control
But it ain’t much worth relying on
And these people with their haircuts and their self esteem
Global conscience and living clean
What the hell does that even mean?
And their closets got more skeletons than the Smithsonian
Especially the born again
Better stay the hell away from them
Woah you’re better off lost somewhere in Memphis
You can leave your troubles behind
You get all boozed up and useless
Grow numb to the passing of time
You get busted on the inside
But the outside will be just fine
When you leave your mind on the Shelby County line

Oh, the dust
04:20
|
|||
Oh the dust
Stepping through my back door, there ain’t nothing but sand
And a breeze so small, fit it all in my hand
Ain’t no heaven, no highway, no Indian ride
Through the dust to this ghost town by which I abide
Try to keep my head high, well above the gloom
Where no memories can hide in the corners of the room
A blindfolded mind’s eye, nail it on if I must
Like some long-shuttered ballroom shrouded in dust
Like the dust in my eyes, the dust in my coal black lungs
From which one is made, one becomes
Like the dust in my eyes, the dust in my coal black dreams
In dust I’ll remain so it seems, so it seems…
Beneath the whip of this desert, we’re all quick to grow old
Its all sunsets of violet, blood red and gold
And not one word of wisdom has ever been told
And not one brittle husk of a man has gone cold
And the dust in my eyes, the dust in my coal black lungs
From which one is made, one becomes
Yeah the dust in my eyes, the dust in my coal black dreams
In dust I’ll remain so it seems
Oh the dust in my eyes, the dust in my coal black heart
Lingering there from the start
Yeah the dust in my eyes, the dust in my coal black dreams
In dust I’ll remain so it seems, so it seems

Once upon a time

Once Upon A Time
Once upon a time, we were trashed and lonely
Living on the rind, playing at some holy light
Not so long ago, it was you and me against the world
Now we’re living in the hive, tooth and nail to stay alive
Don’t dwell on what you can’t find
Being lost is a state of mind.
Oh no, hold on
Don’t dwell on what you left behind
Cruel wind whipping up the sands of time
Oh no, hold on
Once upon a time, we were close to cleaning up
Finishing the rhyme that crystallized the meaning of
This whole broken world, the reason every boy and girl
Is inching toward the fall of war and death and fuck it all
Don’t dwell on what you can’t find
Being lost is a state of mind.
Oh no, hold on
Don’t dwell on what you left behind
Cruel wind whipping up the sands of time
Oh no, hold on
Steady crawl towards a downfall
Still thinking there’s a ways to go
Oh no, hold on
Steady crawl into freefall
Start thinking you could lose it all
Oh no, hold on once upon a time

I hate new york

I hate NY
Guess we were born here, so mama this is our town
Besides we got family, roots in the ground
If there’s only one thing I’ve learned about folks compensating for lack
Its everyone I’ve ever known goes away but ends up coming back
To the cold days, and the colder nights
Where a sunless haze weighs down on a failing light
Cannot stay, gonna leave today
You’ve had your say and I don’t wanna play no more
Cause I hate New York
Everyone else here knows how I feel
There summers grown shorter year after year
They point to old pictures and brag how they smiled despite what they’ve been through
And ignore how the shadows hang heavy and dark in the eyes of the old and the new
In the cold days, and the colder nights
Where a sunless haze weighs down on a failing light
Cannot stay, gonna leave today
You’ve had your say and I don’t wanna play no more
Cause I hate New York
Guess if it’s anywhere, this is the place
That put salt on my soul and put lines on my face
But anything that’s come to pass would have born out regardless of where we were
So why not fill the car up with gas and head out cause I know you’d prefer
The beautiful days and the beautifuller nights
Where the palm trees bend and sway like Arabian kites
By the sea we’ll be all right
A sacred land on the golden sand
So take my hand and say, as we toss the cork
Get lost, New York

Fourth of July

|

4th of July
4th of July on a hilltop in the sun
Waiting for night to fall, night to come
Lady twilight, from her home down in the ghetto
Wanders in and calmly waves around her gun
But who’s that madman chasing people off their blankets with a knife?
Who moved the neon, and why does no one else here care to spare their lives?
Moonbeams dance on the county reservoir
Where hippies dog-walk down the old romantic promenade
What silent horrors lie in wait outside the car?
Vengeful trollops of some long forgotten demigod
Shadowless comrades, flag a spacecraft down, the wolves are chasing after us
We got to cut loose the dead weight and kill the headlights, can’t this thing go any faster?!
On the sand, under starlight pure and grand
Running screaming from the black obsidian obelisk
While briny tentacles glissade across the land
Well, lets be honest, is anyone else here really feeling this?
Sometimes the devil wears a white dress- an attempt to fool the pastor
While all us legitimate beauty queens lay choking on our libertine disaster

Don’t Come to Town Unless You’re a Pariah
Don’t come to town unless you’re a pariah
And don’t hang around here reporting on the fire
Wrapped like a noose around this place, and tightening down
Don’t want to see your perfect face staring up at the moon from a hole in the ground
400 yards away from where we’re standing
Machine gunner gods are from stairways and steeples commanding:
“Empty your pockets and pile up your shoes and get on the train.
Now you’ve got nothing of value to lose except for the clothes on your back and your name.”
Children cry out. Their screams resound unabated.
Grandfathers cower and stoop as they’re cruelly corralled and berated
Women just stand on their toes and wave, desperate not to fall out of sight
Of heartbroken men who dare not misbehave, but stare down bayonets they’re unable to fight
I watched them go, heard the doors creak shut and the axles groaning
The sun settled lonely and cold in the steam cloud the engine exhaled with a moan
If not for the long-shadowed tracks in the dust, you’d think no one was there
And even the footprints will go when a gust of wind blows out the smoke that now hangs in the air
